The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin in Orvieto is a Roman Catholic cathedral dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The cathedral was built in honor of a miracle that happened in a church near the village of Bolsena. According to legend, the wandering priest doubted the reality of the Transubstantiation. But in the Cathedral of Orvieto, he found his host so bleeding that it stained the altar cloth. Now the cover is stored in the Chapel del Corporal inside the cathedral. The church rises above the city on a volcanic formation. The façade is a classical religious building containing elements from the 14th to the 20th century, with a huge rose window, gold mosaics and three large bronze doors. Inside are two small chapels with frescoes by some of the finest Italian artists of the time depicting the Day of Judgment. The cathedral has five Renaissance bells.
