Dam Square is a square in the center of Amsterdam. It is the historic heart of the city and the site of many events of national significance. On and on Dam Square are the Royal Palace, the Nieuwe Kerk and the National Monument, where the annual National Remembrance Day is held.
Dam Square is located about 750 meters south of Central Station. The square is rectangular, about 100 meters wide from north to south and about 200 meters long from west to east. The Dam connects the streets Damrak and Rokin, which run from Central Station to Muntplein. Well-known streets such as Nieuwendijk, Kalverstraat, Warmoesstraat, Nes, Damstraat and Paleisstraat also end up on Dam Square.
There are several striking buildings on the square. On the west side is the Palace on Dam Square, which initially served as a town hall (inaugurated in 1655), but has been a royal palace since 1808. Furthermore, the Nieuwe Kerk and Madame Tussauds wax museum are located.
On the eastern side of the square is the National Monument, which was erected in 1956 in memory of the victims of World War II. Also on the east side of the square is Hotel Krasnapolsky, next to which is the webcam. On the northeast side is the Amsterdam branch of the department store De Bijenkorf. The buildings make Dam Square a tourist attraction.
